FINE ARTS

Fine Arts

At Holy Family, the arts are part of everyday activity; within both core classes and our fine arts curriculum. Specific fine arts classes include music and art.

Music

The Music Program at Holy Family serves students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grader attend music classes weekly for 43 minutes. Choir and Band are optional components of the music program. Mass Choir is available for students in grades 2-5 and they rehearse both during the school day and before the school Mass day. Junior High Choir is for students in grades 6-8 and they rehearse before school and during lunch. Students in the fourth grade have the opportunity to join band; lessons are offered three times weekly before school. Fifth through eighth graders have band rehearsals three times weekly before school.

The goal of the music program is to engage students in three areas of music: active music making, music literacy activities, and learning about music. Students in Kindergarten through First Grade learn music primarily through fun songs, games, and activities. Beginning in first grade, students learn, through the Kodály methodology, a sequential means of learning to read and write music. Students in grades 2-5 practice school mass hymns, sing songs, play games, play instruments, and listen to and watch musical examples. Students in all grades and levels learn about a “word of the month,” and these concepts become progressively more complex as the grade levels increase. Students in grades 2-5 learn about a “composer of the month” and need to write about that composer and share their facts with the class. The goal with all students is to help them become lifelong musicians who can sing in tune, move to a steady beat, and intuit the expressive qualities of music.
